The Ford Ranger Hybrid brings plug-in electric capability to a familiar double-cab ute format, combining a 2.3-litre EcoBoost petrol engine with an electric motor and a high-voltage battery. Rather than treating electrification as a compromise, the system is designed to add flexibility to the Ranger’s everyday usability, with the ability to use electric power for suitable trips while retaining the long-distance practicality of a combustion engine.

Its four selectable drive modes are central to that versatility. Auto EV allows the vehicle to manage the balance between petrol and electric power, while EV Now prioritises electric-only driving for quiet, low-emission urban running. EV Later preserves available battery charge for a particular destination or part of a journey, and EV Charge uses the engine to replenish the battery while travelling. This approach gives the driver more control over how the available energy is used rather than locking the vehicle into a single operating mode.

The Ranger’s working credentials remain prominent. The plug-in hybrid drivetrain is paired with four-wheel drive and a double-cab body, retaining the broad format expected of a modern work and recreation ute. Published capability figures include up to 3,500kg of braked towing capacity, more than 800kg of payload and 697Nm of torque at 2,500rpm. These figures position the hybrid system as a tool for carrying and towing as well as a means of reducing fuel use on shorter journeys.

Power delivery is supported by the electric motor’s immediate response, while the hybrid system’s maximum combined power is listed at 207kW. The high-voltage battery has an 11.8kWh capacity, and Pro Power Onboard can provide up to 6.9kW of electrical output. That onboard power capability can be useful when operating equipment away from conventional power sources, although the practical load and operating conditions will depend on the equipment being used and the vehicle configuration.

The Ranger Hybrid range includes Sport, Wildtrak, XL and XLT variants, with equipment and styling varying between grades. Commonly highlighted features include an integrated 12-inch centre LCD touchscreen and Pro Power Onboard, while grade-specific details include different wheel designs, exterior treatments and equipment presentations. The Stormtrak specification adds a distinctive appearance built around Chill Grey paint, unique decals, black 18-inch alloy wheels and a custom interior, while the broader range offers several available exterior colours.

For drivers who regularly alternate between urban travel, longer-distance trips and practical ute duties, the Ranger Hybrid’s appeal lies in its breadth of operation. Electric driving can suit selected local journeys, while the petrol engine and four-wheel-drive hardware preserve flexibility when charging opportunities are limited or heavier work is required. The result is a Ranger designed to broaden the ways a double-cab ute can be used without abandoning towing, payload or off-road capability.
