Vehicle Overview

2025 Hyundai Inster 2WD (42kWh).

The Hyundai Inster Standard Range brings battery-electric power to a particularly compact and distinctive package. Its boxy proportions, futuristic styling and small footprint give it an unusual presence among affordable electric vehicles, while also creating more usable space inside than its exterior dimensions suggest. The result is a city-focused EV that prioritises manoeuvrability, efficiency and clever packaging rather than outright performance or long-distance touring ability.

Power comes from a single electric motor producing 71kW and 147Nm, driving the front wheels through a single-speed automatic transmission. The modest outputs are well suited to the Inster’s lightweight construction, giving it responsive initial acceleration and enough performance to keep pace with urban traffic. Its narrow body, light steering and tight turning circle are particularly useful in crowded streets and car parks, where the vehicle’s compact dimensions make positioning straightforward. Regenerative braking can be adjusted using steering-wheel paddles, with a one-pedal driving mode available for drivers who want to maximise energy recovery.

Ride comfort is one of the Inster’s stronger characteristics. The suspension deals capably with sharper bumps and remains composed over larger undulations, giving the small EV a reassuring level of versatility on imperfect roads. It is not a performance car, and the standard tyres can limit available grip when cornering enthusiastically, but the chassis feels nimble and confident for normal road use.

The Standard Range uses a 42kWh nickel manganese cobalt battery and has a claimed driving range of up to 327km. Its official energy-efficiency figure is 14.3kWh per 100km, while testing recorded 13.1kWh per 100km over a mixture of town, country and highway driving. That combination makes the Inster particularly well matched to regular urban use, although its range and compact battery are less suited to frequent long-distance travel than larger EVs. DC fast charging is supported at up to 120kW, with a claimed 10-to-80 per cent charging time of 30 minutes when connected to a suitable charger. AC charging is rated at up to 10.5kW.

Inside, the high roof and large windows create an airy cabin, while the open space between the front occupants helps the interior feel less confined than expected. Front-seat adjustment and steering-wheel reach and rake adjustment provide a useful range of driving positions. The four-seat layout gives the rear passengers more room than the vehicle’s footprint might suggest, and the second-row seats slide and recline to balance passenger comfort against luggage capacity. With the seats in their most accommodating position, boot capacity is 280 litres, increasing to 351 litres when the rear bench is moved forward. Folding the rear seats flat expands the available cargo area to 1,059 litres, with additional under-floor storage for charging cables.

Standard equipment includes 15-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, keyless entry and start, adaptive cruise control, a 10.25-inch digital instrument display and a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Recycled cloth upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, single-zone climate control, LED cabin lighting, a heat pump, wireless smartphone charging and vehicle-to-load charging add practical value. Satellite navigation, over-the-air software updates and a six-speaker sound system are also included.

The infotainment system is bright and relatively easy to navigate, with physical shortcuts that make common functions simple to access. However, the hardware is not as sharp or responsive as the best systems in this segment, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto require a wired USB-A connection rather than wireless integration. This is a functional rather than class-leading technology package.

Safety equipment includes autonomous emergency braking with junction assist, pedestrian, cyclist and motorcyclist detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist with lane centring, traffic-sign recognition, driver-attention monitoring, safe-exit alerts and rear-occupant alerts. A rear-view camera and rear parking sensors assist with manoeuvring. The Inster received a four-star ANCAP safety rating in testing conducted in 2025.

The Hyundai Inster Standard Range is a distinctive small EV whose greatest strengths are its compact dimensions, flexible interior and efficient urban driving character. Its limited range, some low-cost interior materials and less advanced infotainment hardware are notable compromises, but the combination of easy manoeuvrability, useful rear-seat space and flexible cargo arrangements gives it a clear point of difference in the small electric vehicle market.
