Vehicle Overview

The Phase III BJ8 was the final six-cylinder Austin Healey 3000 evolution, introduced in 1965 as a more sophisticated interpretation of the marque’s established British sports-touring formula. This 1966 example combines the familiar long bonnet and compact open-cockpit proportions with the more mature specification that distinguished the MkIII, making it suited to relaxed touring as well as spirited weekend use.

Its presentation is defined by black coachwork with a contrasting red flash, brightwork and 72-spoke chrome wire wheels. The combination has the period-correct visual impact expected of a Big Healey while retaining the practical appeal of a full convertible. The black vinyl one-touch hood, hood cover and tonneau cover maintain a cohesive appearance when the car is either open or enclosed.

Inside, the BJ8’s enhanced touring character is particularly evident. Claret red leather-style trim complements the exterior accents, while the burr walnut dashboard adds warmth and visual depth. Wind-up windows are a useful refinement over earlier Healey arrangements, and the optional Smiths heater gives the cabin greater flexibility in cooler conditions. A wood-rimmed Moto-Lita steering wheel and BMC AM radio complete an interior that remains unmistakably tied to its period.

Power comes from the familiar 2.9-litre straight-six, retaining the standard mechanical character of the original design. Twin 2-inch SU carburettors, Lucas generator and starter motor, points ignition and a spin-on oil-filter conversion support an uncomplicated, traditional engine bay. The specification is deliberately close to the car’s original engineering, preserving the direct mechanical involvement that defines classic Austin Healey ownership.

The four-speed manual gearbox is paired with overdrive, giving the car a broader range of usefulness than a close-ratio sports transmission alone. That combination allows the engine’s torque to be enjoyed on winding roads while providing a more settled character when cruising. Independent front suspension, a live rear axle, power-assisted front disc brakes and rear drums reflect the BJ8’s blend of sporting intent and period touring practicality.

This example was originally despatched to the United States, later exported from California to Australia in 2002, converted to right-hand drive and restored in 2005–06. The accompanying history file provides useful context for its Australian life and restoration. It is offered unregistered with a Victorian roadworthy certificate, so registration arrangements remain a consideration for the next owner.
