2026 BMW i4 gets hotter M60 flagship, longer driving range

Vehicle Overview

2026 BMW i4 M60 xDrive.

The 2026 BMW i4 builds on the appeal of BMW’s electric fastback with a more powerful flagship and improved range for its rear-drive variants. Production of the updated model is scheduled to begin in July 2025, although BMW Australia has not confirmed when the changes will arrive locally.

At the top of the overseas range, the i4 M60 xDrive replaces the M50. Its dual-motor all-wheel-drive system produces 442kW, an increase of 42kW over the outgoing model, and reduces the claimed 0-100km/h time to 3.7 seconds. That combination gives the i4 a distinctly performance-oriented character while retaining the practical liftback body style associated with the model.

Efficiency improvements are also central to the update. Silicon carbide semiconductor components in the inverter are claimed to reduce energy consumption by 4.5 per cent, helping the i4 make better use of its battery capacity. The changes are particularly useful for drivers who value fewer charging stops and greater flexibility on longer journeys.

The entry-level i4 eDrive35 gains a WLTP driving range of 428km, up from 406km, while the eDrive40 increases its claimed range to 510km from 491km. The eDrive35 continues with a 210kW electric powertrain and a 70.2kWh battery, making it a relatively accessible way into the i4 range without sacrificing the quiet, immediate response expected of an electric BMW.

BMW’s revisions are evolutionary rather than a wholesale redesign. The updated i4 follows a minor styling update introduced in Europe, while the core choice between the efficient rear-drive models and the more powerful all-wheel-drive flagship remains intact. For Australian buyers, the main outstanding question is timing: local specifications and availability are yet to be announced.
