Vehicle Overview
This 1991 Mercedes-Benz 190E 3.2 AMG represents one of the most unusual and collectable interpretations of the W201 platform. It is a genuine pre-merger AMG, produced during the period when AMG operated as an independent workshop and assembled its cars by hand. That provenance places it among the earliest and most distinctive AMG conversions, before the company became part of Mercedes-Benz.
The car was delivered new in Germany and is described as one of only 125 examples of the 190E 3.2 AMG produced. Its five-speed manual transmission makes it particularly scarce, with approximately one-third of these cars reportedly leaving Affalterbach with a manual gearbox. For an enthusiast, that combination provides a more direct connection between the driver and the bespoke mechanical package than an automatic-equipped example.
At the centre of the car is a hand-built 3.2-litre straight-six producing around 234 hp. In the compact W201 body, that engine gives the car a character distinct from the more familiar four-cylinder 190E range, while the manual gearbox adds an involving, mechanical quality to the driving experience. The appeal is not based solely on rarity: the car reflects a formative period in AMG history, when performance development was carried out in small numbers with considerable individual craftsmanship.
This example spent more than two decades with a single private collector in Germany before being imported to Australia in 2023. Its German delivery, pre-merger status, uncommon manual transmission and limited production make it a significant expression of AMG's early work. The 145,665-kilometre odometer reading and preserved original specification should be considered in the context of a vehicle valued for its historical identity as much as its driving appeal.
