Biomass Boosts Greener Grenadier Production

Vehicle Overview

INEOS Grenadier.

The Grenadier is produced at the Hambach facility in France, a site that has undergone substantial investment and expansion since 2019. The factory now incorporates a fully automated body shop, a semi-automated paint shop, a quality inspection laboratory and a dedicated pool for testing water ingress. These additions have increased the site’s footprint while supporting production of the Grenadier and Quartermaster for export markets.

To address the additional energy demand created by the expanded facility, Hambach has introduced a biomass heat plant. The system uses locally and sustainably sourced woodchips as a renewable fuel, providing a practical way to reduce the emissions associated with heating and operating the production site.

Two large boilers burn up to 14,000 tonnes of woodchips annually. The resulting steam drives turbines connected to generators, producing 9.2 megawatts of electricity. That output is comparable to the electricity needs of approximately 6,000 homes and is expected to supply around three quarters of the facility’s requirements for nine months of the year. An existing gas boiler remains in place to provide the balance.

The project is expected to reduce emissions from the Hambach operation by 8,800 tonnes of CO2. Its approach also extends beyond energy generation: ash left after the biomass is burned is supplied to local agriculture, where its nitrate content allows it to be used as enriched fertiliser. This creates a secondary use for the plant’s by-product rather than treating it solely as waste.

The biomass facility forms part of a broader sustainability programme at Hambach. The site has sourced its energy from renewable hydroelectric power for seven years, and the new plant increases its renewable energy capacity as production requirements grow. For the Grenadier, this means its manufacturing story includes not only robust production infrastructure and detailed quality checks, but also a factory operation designed to reduce the environmental impact of its energy use.
