Toyota Camry 2026 review: SL Hybrid long-term | Part 1
Vehicle Overview
The 2026 Toyota Camry SL Hybrid makes a strong case for the traditional family sedan at a time when most buyers are looking towards SUVs. It combines a spacious cabin, efficient petrol-electric power and a generous level of equipment, while retaining the low-slung driving position and composed road manners associated with the Camry nameplate.
At the heart of the SL Hybrid is a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine paired with an electric motor and a compact battery. The petrol engine produces 138kW and 221Nm, while the electric motor contributes 100kW and 208Nm. Toyota does not publish a simple combined output figure, but the system provides capable acceleration for everyday driving and sufficient reserve for overtaking. Power is sent to the front wheels through an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission, giving the Camry a smooth and unobtrusive character in normal use.
Official fuel consumption is listed at 4.0L/100km, although the long-term test vehicle recorded 5.6L/100km over its first month. That result was influenced by frequent short trips involving shopping, childcare and local errands, where the petrol engine has less opportunity to reach its most efficient operating conditions. The hybrid system remains well suited to stop-start urban driving, but the real-world result demonstrates why usage patterns matter when assessing efficiency.
The SL is the most comprehensively equipped grade in the three-variant Camry range. Its exterior specification includes 18-inch alloy wheels, LED lighting at the front and rear, and a powered boot release operated from the key. Inside, the synthetic-leather seats are heated, ventilated and power adjustable in the front, while the synthetic-leather steering wheel is heated. A 12.3-inch multimedia display provides wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, with a wireless charging pad helping keep compatible devices ready without trailing cables.
The driver also gets a 12.3-inch digital instrument display and a head-up display that places useful information such as speed, speed-limit recognition and safety warnings within the driver's view. A digital rear-view mirror is fitted, although its usefulness is dependent on conditions and the conventional mirror may provide a more natural experience for some drivers. A panoramic sunroof with a proper shade adds light to the cabin without sacrificing the ability to block sunlight when required.
Space is one of the Camry's most persuasive qualities. There is generous room in both seating rows, and the rear compartment can accommodate front-facing and rear-facing child seats while retaining useful legroom for passengers in the front. Rear occupants benefit from dedicated air-conditioning vents and USB charging ports. The cabin's broad proportions make the Camry feel particularly suitable for carrying several passengers over longer journeys.
The boot provides 524 litres of capacity, which is comparable with many mid-size SUVs. Its long, shallow shape is less adaptable for tall or bulky cargo than an SUV's squarer load area, but it remains capable of carrying a pram and additional bags. A temporary spare wheel is supplied instead of a full-size spare, offering more reassurance than a repair kit in the event of a puncture but with less capability for extended driving on a damaged tyre.
There are compromises. Premium unleaded is required, and the temporary spare is not as versatile as a full-size replacement. The digital rear-view mirror also does not necessarily improve usability in every situation. Even so, the Camry SL Hybrid's combination of passenger space, polished hybrid operation, strong equipment levels and practical boot makes it a well-rounded alternative to a mid-size SUV for buyers who do not need the taller body or boxier cargo area.
Other highlights include Odometer: 2242km; Powertrain: Premium Unleaded/Electric; Transmission: e-CVT; Drive train: Front-wheel drive; Engine or motor: Inline 4, 2.5L; Exterior colour: Blue.
