Chery Omoda E5

The Chery Omoda E5 is a compact fully electric SUV introduced to the Australian market in 2024. It uses the same basic T1X platform and broad design concept as the petrol-powered Omoda 5, but replaces the turbocharged engine with a single electric motor driving the front wheels. That gives the E5 a quiet, smooth character suited to everyday urban driving while retaining the practical proportions and elevated seating position expected of a small SUV.

Its 61.10kWh battery is paired with a claimed WLTP range of 430km, with official energy consumption listed at 15.5kWh/100km. The single permanent magnet synchronous motor produces 150kW and 340Nm, enough for a claimed 0-100km/h time of 7.6 seconds and a maximum speed of 172km/h. The drivetrain is deliberately straightforward, using a single-speed reduction gear transmission rather than a multi-ratio automatic.

Inside, the cabin is defined by a pair of 12.3-inch screens, with one handling instrumentation and the other providing multimedia functions. The standard equipment list includes built-in satellite navigation, wireless and wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wireless device charging, a six-speaker Sony audio system with digital radio and voice control. Dual-zone climate control, keyless entry and start, rain-sensing wipers and heated, power-folding exterior mirrors add convenience to the daily driving experience.

The five-seat layout provides useful passenger space, including enough rear headroom and legroom for adults around 182cm tall. The entry-level seating specification combines fabric trim with synthetic leather accents, while higher grades use full synthetic leather. Cargo capacity is more modest than some rivals, with 300 litres available behind the second row. Folding the 60/40 split rear backrest increases this to 1079 litres, and a 19-litre front storage compartment provides additional room for charging equipment or smaller items.

As a value-focused electric SUV, the Omoda E5 places considerable emphasis on technology and standard equipment. Its active safety suite is a strong part of the package, although independent assessment of safety-assistance calibration and ride compliance has identified areas that may not match the best-established competitors. The compact dimensions, front-wheel-drive layout and quiet electric powertrain nevertheless give it a clear focus for buyers seeking an accessible EV with a practical five-seat cabin.
