Hyundai Kona Electric 2022 review: Standard Range
Vehicle Overview
2022 Hyundai Kona Elite Electric Std Range.
The 2022 Hyundai Kona Electric Elite Standard Range is a compact electric SUV that combines a city-friendly footprint with the quiet, smooth response expected from a battery-electric vehicle. Its compact dimensions make it straightforward to place on narrow streets and in tight parking spaces, while the single electric motor provides strong low-speed response and useful overtaking performance.
This version uses a 39.2kWh battery and has a stated electric range of 305km. The front-mounted motor produces 100kW and 395Nm, giving the Kona brisk acceleration for its size. As with most EVs, the power delivery is immediate and refined, although the short wheelbase means sharp speed humps can have a noticeable effect on ride comfort for passengers.
Charging flexibility is one of the Kona Electric's practical strengths. The charging port is positioned in the nose and uses a Type 2 connection. With a 50kW fast charger, the battery can be replenished from 10 to 80 per cent in about 48 minutes. A regular household power point can charge it from 10 to 100 per cent in roughly six hours, making overnight charging a realistic option where suitable home access is available.
The Elite cabin has a more upmarket appearance than the Kona's compact dimensions might suggest. A floating centre console, push-button gear selector and digital instrument cluster give the interior a modern layout, while the large media display keeps navigation and entertainment functions within easy reach. The test vehicle featured white leather upholstery, which adds a bright, premium look but requires more care in everyday use.
Equipment is generous for the grade. A proximity key, push-button start, satellite navigation, dark-tinted rear side windows, wireless phone charging, front and rear USB ports and a 12-volt outlet are useful conveniences. The technology package includes a 10.25-inch digital instrument display, a 10.25-inch media screen, an eight-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, digital radio, Bluetooth connectivity and remote start.
Safety equipment is another strong point. The Kona Electric carries the five-star ANCAP rating applied to the regular Kona, and includes autonomous emergency braking with vehicle, cyclist and pedestrian detection, rear autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance and blind-spot warning. Two ISOFIX points and three top-tether mounts are provided for child seats.
The main limitation is space. Although the Kona seats five, its 4.2-metre body and 2.6-metre wheelbase create a fairly confined cabin, particularly in the second row. The 332-litre boot is modest for a family-oriented SUV and may be challenged by bulky prams, bikes or scooters. A rearward-facing child seat can also reduce the usable space for the front passenger. These constraints do not diminish its appeal as a compact urban EV, but they are important considerations for anyone expecting substantial passenger or cargo room.
Overall, the Kona Electric Elite Standard Range offers an appealing mix of efficient electric operation, strong equipment levels, quick charging capability and easy manoeuvrability. Its range is suitable for many regular commutes and local trips, while its compact size is valuable in busy urban environments. The trade-off is a cramped rear seat and limited boot, making it better suited to buyers who prioritise electric driving and convenient dimensions over maximum family practicality.
Other highlights include Transmission: 1 SPEED AUTOMATIC; Drive train: Front-wheel drive; Engine or motor: Permanent Magnet electric motor; Exterior colour: Surfy Blue.
