1971 VH Valiant Pacer 265 - Vitamin C
Vehicle Overview
1971 Chrysler Valiant Pacer 265.
The 1971 VH Valiant Pacer occupies an important place in Australian performance-car history, combining the practical shape of a four-door family sedan with the distinctive visual treatment and mechanical character of Chrysler's Pacer program. Finished in Vitamin C with black Pacer stripes and black vinyl trim, this example presents as a survivor-style restoration that deliberately retains much of the character associated with an older Australian muscle car.
According to the supplied vehicle information, only 1,631 original four-door VH Pacers were produced. That limited production gives the car genuine enthusiast significance, while the four-door body provides a useful degree of everyday practicality rarely found in period performance cars. The bright orange finish, factory glass and chrome, Pacer detailing and W35 alloy wheels give it an unmistakable presence without relying on modernised styling.
The restoration began in 2019 and was completed in 2021 after the car was acquired as a rolling shell in 2018. The shell is described as largely rust-free and required little structural repair. Original Vitamin C paint remains on the roof, boot lid, upper door areas and the left-hand rear quarter, while colour-matched acrylic paint was applied to the bonnet, front quarters and right-hand side. This approach preserves visible links to the car's past rather than presenting an over-restored or entirely reconstructed finish.
Power comes from a period-correct 265-cubic-inch Hemi six-cylinder engine rebuilt to E49+ specification. The engine uses a factory two-barrel inlet manifold with a port-matched Holley adaptor, a 500 cfm Holley two-barrel carburettor, a factory dual-outlet exhaust manifold, a single 2.5-inch exhaust system and electronic ignition. Its manual transmission is a wide-ratio, four-speed single-rail Borg Warner unit fitted with a short-shifter selector, while the original open-centre 3.23:1 Borg Warner differential remains in place.
New suspension, brake and steering components were fitted as part of the restoration, supporting the car's role as a usable classic rather than a static display piece. The braking specification includes the factory B51 power brake booster. Factory W35 alloys measure 14 by 7 inches and are fitted with 235/60R14 BF Goodrich T/A tyres, giving the Pacer an appropriately period-inspired stance.
Inside, the A95 interior dress-up package is represented by reclining bucket seats, black seat skins, matching door cards, carpet and a three-spoke steering wheel. The dash pad has also been renewed and the instrument gauges professionally recalibrated. Together, these details give the cabin a coherent factory-influenced appearance while making it better suited to regular club use and longer drives.
The car is accompanied by an extensive photographic portfolio covering its condition when purchased, approximately 300 images of body restoration, paint preparation and reassembly, along with photographs of the engine build. A receipt file is also supplied. For an enthusiast seeking a rare Australian performance sedan with documented restoration activity, authentic period presentation and a substantially rebuilt mechanical package, this VH Pacer offers a distinctive blend of provenance, usability and visual appeal.
