The Isuzu MU-X is a seven-seat SUV designed to combine family practicality with the hardware expected of a serious towing and touring vehicle. Its appeal lies in the breadth of its abilities: the cabin is arranged for three rows of occupants, while the underlying diesel-powered, four-wheel-drive architecture is intended to handle both everyday road use and more demanding journeys.

At the centre of the range is Isuzu's 3.0-litre 4JJ3 turbo-diesel engine, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. The engine uses a high-pressure injection system and an electronically controlled variable-geometry turbocharger. That combination is suited to the MU-X's dual role as a people mover and towing vehicle, with the vehicle rated to tow up to 3,500kg braked. Trailer Sway Control is included to assist when towing conditions become unsettled, including windy roads or uneven surfaces.

The MU-X also provides a selectable terrain system that allows the driver to move between two-wheel drive and 4WD Hi while travelling at speeds of up to 100km/h. A rear differential lock, hill descent control and an 800mm wading depth further support its off-road brief. These features do not turn the SUV into a specialist off-road vehicle, but they provide useful additional capability when surfaces become slippery, steep or wet.

Exterior changes give the latest MU-X a more assertive appearance. The redesigned front end incorporates a chrome grille, LED headlights and LED daytime running lights, while LED tail lights improve visibility from behind. Alloy side steps make entry and exit easier, and roof rails are fitted as standard. The LS-T specification shown here is distinguished by leather-accented seating with heated front seats, 20-inch machined two-tone alloy wheels and highway-terrain tyres.

Inside, the cabin takes a function-led approach, with the layout described as being inspired by an aircraft cockpit. Electric adjustment and heating for the front seats add comfort in colder conditions, while the three-row layout provides seating for seven. The split-fold rear seats, centre armrest and USB Type-C connections help make the back rows more useful on longer trips. Double-sealed doors and additional soundproofing are intended to create a quieter environment, and cup holders are provided across all three rows.

Storage has been considered throughout the cabin, with door pockets, seatback pockets, upper-centre-console storage and space beneath the steering wheel. A 12-volt 120-watt power socket and four USB Type-C ports support devices, while folding the rear seats expands the available carrying space.

Technology is centred on a 9.0-inch touchscreen with integrated satellite navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A 360-degree surround-view camera assists with low-speed manoeuvring, complemented by front and rear parking sensors and a reversing camera. Adaptive cruise control is designed to maintain a set distance from traffic ahead, which is particularly useful during extended open-road driving.

Safety equipment includes Isuzu's Intelligent Driver Assistance System, which uses sensors and a stereo camera to monitor the surrounding environment. The system incorporates forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, emergency lane keeping, lane departure prevention, blind-spot monitoring, traffic-sign recognition and driver attention assistance. Automatic lights, high beam and rain-sensing wipers add further convenience, while eight airbags and a reinforced cabin safety cell form part of the passive safety package. The MU-X has a five-star ANCAP safety rating.

With its seven-seat interior, diesel engine, selectable four-wheel drive and 3,500kg braked towing capacity, the MU-X is configured for owners who need more than a conventional urban SUV. The LS-T adds a higher level of cabin trim and equipment while retaining the practical, adventure-oriented character that defines the model.
