Vehicle Overview

2025 GWM HAVAL H7 Vanta Hybrid (2WD).

The 2025 GWM Haval H7 Vanta Hybrid is a distinctive addition to Australia’s crowded medium-SUV market. Its upright, assertive styling, generous ground clearance and rugged visual details suggest an off-road focus, but the underlying package is more urban and touring-oriented. With front-wheel drive and no dedicated off-road drive modes, the H7 is better understood as a spacious soft-roader than a serious four-wheel-drive adventure vehicle.

Its strongest impression is made inside. The boxy body creates useful headroom and a welcoming sense of space, while the second row provides ample legroom for adults travelling behind taller front occupants. A panoramic sunroof contributes to the airy atmosphere, and rear passengers receive air vents, sun shades, a folding armrest with cupholders and USB connectivity. Twin ISOFIX anchors on the outboard rear seats and three top-tether points add useful flexibility for family duties.

Practicality is supported by a 483-litre luggage area with all five seats in use, expanding to 1,363 litres when the rear seats are folded. A removable boot floor helps tailor the cargo area to different loads, although the space beneath it contains a tyre repair kit rather than a spare wheel. Numerous front-cabin storage areas, including a rubber-lined tray, cupholders, an air-cooled compartment and additional concealed storage, make the H7 well suited to the everyday accumulation of phones, bags and travel items.

The Vanta Hybrid’s equipment list is extensive. Leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, power adjustment, lumbar support and a massage function give the front cabin a more premium character. A 10.25-inch digital instrument display sits ahead of the driver, while the central 14.6-inch touchscreen provides a contemporary interface for the infotainment system. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto make smartphone integration convenient, and DAB+ radio is paired with an eight-speaker sound system. The lack of a physical volume dial is a minor usability compromise in an otherwise feature-rich cabin.

Convenience equipment includes a head-up display, wireless phone charging, dual-zone climate control, ambient lighting, keyless entry and start, semi-autonomous parking assistance and a surround-view camera with transparent-chassis functionality. LED headlights, fog lights, cornering lights, front and rear parking sensors and 19-inch alloy wheels complete a specification aimed at delivering substantial standard equipment rather than relying heavily on options.

Power comes from a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine paired with a strong electric motor. Combined outputs are quoted at 179kW and 530Nm, giving the H7 brisk initial acceleration. That performance can expose the limitations of the front-drive layout, particularly when applying the throttle enthusiastically while turning or when driving on loose surfaces. Power delivery can also feel inconsistent at speed, while the braking response requires some acclimatisation.

In town, the H7 is easy to place thanks to light steering and a useful turning circle. Its suspension deals effectively with many sharper urban bumps and controls body movement reasonably well through corners. Ride composure is less convincing over undulating country roads, where the body can become bouncy. Highway ability is stronger, although the active safety systems can generate frequent audible warnings that may become intrusive.

The hybrid system’s efficiency is a key appeal. GWM quotes combined consumption of 5.7L/100km and carbon dioxide emissions of 131g/km, with the vehicle using a 61-litre fuel tank and 91 RON petrol. Ground clearance of 200mm, a 24-degree approach angle and a 30-degree departure angle provide useful capability for rough access roads and light recreational use, but the front-wheel-drive configuration and absence of off-road modes limit its confidence away from sealed surfaces.

Safety equipment includes autonomous emergency braking with junction assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping assistance, adaptive cruise control, tyre-pressure monitoring, seven airbags and the surround-view camera system. The H7 remained unrated by ANCAP at the time of the review. Overall, the Vanta Hybrid’s appeal rests on its generous equipment, spacious cabin, practical cargo area and efficient petrol-electric powertrain, while its first-generation driving calibration and front-drive limitation remain important considerations.

Other highlights include Powertrain: Unleaded petrol/electric; Transmission: 2SP AUTO DEDICATED H; Drive train: FWD; Engine or motor: 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol-electric hybrid.
