All New GWM Cannon Alpha

The GWM Cannon Alpha is a large ute designed to combine practical load-carrying ability with a more sophisticated cabin and a broad choice of powertrains. Its range includes turbo-diesel models for long-distance travel, towing and conventional refuelling, alongside plug-in hybrid versions that pair a petrol engine with electric drive for quieter, more efficient everyday motoring.

The plug-in hybrid system is based on GWM's Hi4-T technology and uses a BorgWarner transfer case with low range. The system is designed to preserve the traditional strengths of a four-wheel-drive ute while adding electric assistance. Standard front and rear differential locks on the Ultra PHEV further support traction in demanding conditions, while the diesel variants provide an alternative for drivers who prioritise established long-range touring and towing capability.

Inside, the Cannon Alpha takes a more comfort-focused approach than a basic work vehicle. Depending on the chosen grade, the cabin is trimmed in faux leatherette, leather-accented or Nappa leather-accented upholstery. Electric adjustment is available for the front seats, and the Ultra grade adds heated, ventilated and massaging front seats. Hybrid Ultra models also offer reclining outer second-row seats with electric adjustment, giving rear passengers greater comfort on extended journeys.

Technology is centred on a large 14.6-inch infotainment display paired with a separate digital instrument panel. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are listed for selected diesel variants, while GWM app connectivity adds remote convenience features. Parking is assisted by front and rear sensors and a 360-degree camera system, which is particularly useful when positioning a ute in confined spaces or around obstacles.

Practical details include fixed side steps for easier access to the elevated cabin, a high-mounted LED tray light for working after dark and, on the Ultra and Ultra Hybrid grades, a 60/40 split tailgate to simplify access to the cargo bed. The model is also described as having more than 100 active and passive safety features, including automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, lane-departure warning, traffic-sign recognition and driver fatigue monitoring.
