GWM Cannon Alpha

The GWM Cannon Alpha is a large ute that combines traditional load-carrying and four-wheel-drive capability with a more refined, technology-focused cabin. Its broad powertrain range gives the model a useful spread of character: the 2.0L turbo plug-in hybrid is aimed at quieter, more efficient everyday driving, while the 2.4L and 3.0L turbo-diesel engines provide a conventional long-distance and towing-oriented alternative.

The plug-in hybrid models use GWM's Hi4-T system, which combines petrol and electric power with an intelligent four-wheel-drive system. The system includes a Borg Warner transfer case with low range, while the Ultra PHEV adds front and rear differential locks. That combination is designed to retain genuine off-road hardware rather than treating electrification as an alternative to capability. The diesel variants provide a simpler choice for drivers who prefer the established flexibility of turbo-diesel power and familiar refuelling.

Inside, the Cannon Alpha has the ambience of a passenger vehicle rather than a purely utilitarian work truck. Depending on the grade, the cabin is trimmed in faux leatherette, leather-accented or Nappa leather-accented upholstery. Higher specifications add electric seat adjustment, while the Ultra variants bring heated, ventilated and massaging front seats. The PHEV Ultra also offers reclining outer second-row seats with electric adjustment, giving rear passengers a more comfortable position on longer journeys.

Technology is centred on a large touchscreen measuring 14.6 inches on the listed variants, paired with a separate digital instrument display for vehicle information, warnings and driving systems. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available on the Lux diesel and Vanta diesel grades, while GWM app connectivity is intended to add remote convenience and vehicle control functions. A 360-degree camera system, front and rear parking sensors and, on selected variants, auto parking assistance help make the sizable ute easier to place in confined areas.

Practicality remains central to the Cannon Alpha's appeal. Fixed side steps improve access to the elevated cabin, while the tray includes a high-mounted LED light to assist with loading after dark. The Ultra diesel and Ultra PHEV grades use a 60/40 split tailgate, which can make it easier to reach the cargo bed or support loading of bulky items. The Ultra PHEV and Lux PHEV are listed with a 3,500kg braked towing capacity, adding useful flexibility for recreational or work-related hauling.

Safety equipment is extensive across the range, with features including automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition and driver fatigue monitoring. The 360-degree camera adds a clearer view around the vehicle, including a chassis view intended to assist when manoeuvring near obstacles. The model is presented with a five-star ANCAP rating, although individual equipment and local specifications can vary between grades and production versions.
