GWM Cannon Alpha

The GWM Cannon Alpha is a dual-cab ute that combines traditional load-carrying and four-wheel-drive capability with a more refined approach to everyday usability. Its range includes turbo-diesel power for long-distance touring, towing and regular refuelling, alongside a 2.0-litre turbo plug-in hybrid option that pairs a petrol engine with electric drive for quieter, more efficient day-to-day travel.

The plug-in hybrid models use GWM's Hi4-T hybrid intelligent four-wheel-drive system. A BorgWarner transfer case provides low-range capability, while the system's mechanically locking four-wheel drive and available differential locks are designed to maintain traction when surfaces become difficult. This gives the Cannon Alpha a broader operating envelope than a ute intended solely for sealed-road commuting, without abandoning the practicality expected from a work-oriented vehicle.

Inside, the cabin is presented as a more comfortable and technology-focused environment than the utilitarian image traditionally associated with this class. Depending on the chosen grade, the equipment range includes faux leatherette, leather-accented or Nappa leather-accented seating, electrically adjustable front seats and a large 14.6-inch infotainment display. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are listed for the diesel Lux and Vanta grades, while the available screen layout separates vehicle information from entertainment and connectivity functions.

Practical details remain central to the Cannon Alpha's design. Fixed side steps make access to the elevated cabin easier, and a high-mounted LED tray light helps illuminate the cargo area after dark. The Ultra and Ultra Hybrid grades add a 60/40 split tailgate, which can make loading bulky items or reaching into the tray more convenient. A choice of powertrains also means the model can be matched more closely to the demands of the intended use, whether that involves electric-assisted urban driving, extended touring or diesel-powered towing.

Safety and driver assistance are prominent throughout the model presentation. Listed systems include automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, lane-departure warning, traffic-sign recognition and driver-fatigue monitoring. A 360-degree camera system is available across the highlighted grades, helping provide a clearer view around the vehicle when parking, manoeuvring or positioning the ute near obstacles.
