GWM Cannon Alpha

Body type Ute
Fuel Plug-In Hybrid And Turbo Diesel

Vehicle Overview

The GWM Cannon Alpha is a large ute designed to combine everyday comfort with genuine four-wheel-drive capability. Its appeal lies in the breadth of the range: buyers can choose between plug-in hybrid power and turbo-diesel engines, allowing the vehicle to be matched to different driving patterns, touring needs and towing demands.

The plug-in hybrid variants use a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine alongside electric drive, offering the potential for quiet, efficient urban running before the petrol engine is required. The diesel line-up includes 2.4-litre and 3.0-litre turbocharged engines, providing a conventional refuelling solution for longer-distance travel and work-oriented use. The PHEV range also uses GWM's Hi4-T hybrid intelligent four-wheel-drive system, with a Borg Warner transfer case and low-range capability intended for more demanding terrain.

Practicality is supported by a 3500kg braked towing capacity on the listed Ultra and PHEV variants, while differential-lock systems are available across the higher grades. These features give the Cannon Alpha a more versatile brief than a purely urban lifestyle ute, particularly for owners who need to combine passenger space with towing or off-road access.

Inside, the cabin is positioned as a comfort-focused alternative to a traditional workhorse interior. Depending on grade, equipment includes faux leatherette, leather-accented or Nappa leather-accented seating, electric adjustment and, on the most highly equipped versions, heated, ventilated and massaging front seats. Selected hybrid variants add reclining outer second-row seats with electric adjustment, which can make longer journeys more accommodating for rear passengers.

Technology is centred on a large 14.6-inch infotainment display, with a separate instrument display for vehicle information, alerts and driving data. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are listed on the diesel Lux and Vanta variants, while GWM app connectivity adds remote convenience and control. A 360-degree camera system, parking sensors and available auto parking assistance help make the broad ute easier to position in tighter spaces.

Safety equipment includes automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, lane-departure warning, traffic-sign recognition and driver-fatigue monitoring. The model is presented with a five-star ANCAP rating and a substantial suite of active and passive safety systems. Exterior details such as automatic LED headlights and a high-mounted LED tray light also contribute practical value, particularly when loading or accessing the cargo area after dark.
