The GWM Cannon Alpha brings plug-in hybrid technology to a full-size four-wheel-drive ute, combining everyday refinement with the practical qualities expected of a work and touring vehicle. The Lux PHEV uses a 2.0-litre turbo plug-in hybrid powertrain, while the wider Cannon Alpha range also offers turbo-diesel alternatives for buyers seeking a more traditional long-distance powertrain.

Its hybrid system is built around GWM's Hi4-T technology and intelligent 4WD architecture. The system is designed to balance electric assistance with petrol-engine performance, offering a quieter and more efficient character for routine driving while retaining the capability associated with a four-wheel-drive ute. The platform also incorporates a BorgWarner transfer case with low range, giving the PHEV a more comprehensive off-road specification than a simple road-focused hybrid.

Practicality remains central to the Cannon Alpha's appeal. A 3500kg braked towing capacity is listed for the PHEV variants, and the available rear differential lock is intended to improve traction when conditions become difficult. The 60/40 split tailgate provides a more versatile loading edge for the cargo tray, while fixed side steps make access to the elevated cabin easier. Safety equipment is extensive across the Cannon Alpha range.
